Trailer: The first images of Wakfu Season 5
The trailer for Season 5 of “Wakfu” was announced in conjunction with the launch of the Kickstarter for this season. According to information available on the web, pre-production of Season 5 began in 2025, and there was an official teaser shared on February 5, 2025. This teaser was briefly set to private but was confirmed to return with the Kickstarter launch on February 12, 2025.
For the first official images, you can refer to the official trailer released during the opening of the fundraising campaign.
A 10-minute excerpt was broadcast, accompanying the presentation of 21 minutes of key animation (description of a key animation) during the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Alongside the festival, the Ankama Animations website was updated. We were treated to three images (below). The 10-minute excerpt confirms that these three images come from this presented excerpt, as well as the artworks (below) published on Anthony Roux’s X account in 2024.

Plots: What to expect with Wakfu Season 5?
The end of Season 4 left many questions unanswered. In this new season, Yugo and his companions will face even greater challenges. The series will pick up a few months after the events of Season 4 and precede those of the Wakfu manga: La Grande Vague. According to the creators’ revelations, Season 5 will further explore the origins of certain characters and introduce new antagonists. Season 5 will retain the mature tone established in Season 4. Tot emphasized that the series has evolved to become more dramatic and epic with each season. Although the content has become more intense, with elements like zombies and Necros, Tot assured that Season 5 will not push the boundaries further. The goal is to stay true to the Wakfu universe without making it inappropriate for younger viewers.
Regarding the boundaries not to be crossed, Tot addressed a controversial scene from the Wakfu manga: La Grande Vague, which depicts a sex scene between Yugo and Amalia. He pointed out that this type of content is more suitable for the manga format, where readers can let their imagination run wild, unlike the animated series, which leaves less room for interpretation due to its audiovisual nature.
The main antagonist of this season is Count Harebourg, whom we saw in the three special episodes between Season 2 and Season 3. In these episodes, the Brotherhood of Tofu is forced to return to service as the Chaos of Ogrest threatens to overwhelm the Sadida Kingdom. Count Harebourg was part of the “Fratrie des Oubliés,” alongside Echo, Sipho, and Ush.

“End of WAKFU Season 3. The tower of Oropo exploded, taking with it Count Harebourg, Oropo, Echo, and the Eliacube. Was this really the end?“

“WAKFU Season 4. A new threat looms over the World of Twelve; while our heroes must face the Necromes, Count Harebourg, transfigured by the Eliacube, returns to Frigost.”

“WAKFU Season 5. Harebourg has always had one goal: to protect Frigost and restore its nobility. Now, with the immense power of the Eliacube at his disposal, what will his new intentions be? Prepare to discover a more determined and undoubtedly more dangerous Harebourg than ever! (…) with a final confrontation between the Brotherhood of Tofu and this new adversary as icy as he is ruthless.”
The YouTuber Iro Sef published a detailed analysis of the trailer, available below. In his video, he dissects each scene of the trailer, revealing crucial clues about the upcoming plot. The trailer opens with an emblematic and mysterious location: the ruins of the Tower of Dreams, the former HQ of the Fratrie des Oubliés and the site of the massive explosion that marked the dimension of Eliatrope. Quickly, we discover the return of Count Harebourg, a charismatic and intriguing Xélor character, who seems to play a central role this season. A memorable scene shows the Eliacube merging with Harebourg. Iro Sef discusses several hypotheses: either the Eliacube was voluntarily sent to Harebourg, or it has its own consciousness and chose to merge with him. This fusion places Harebourg in a unique situation, further exploring the themes of time and artifacts with their own will.
The analysis also highlights the fascinating parallel with Nox, the iconic Xélor from the early seasons, who was also influenced by the Eliacube. The resemblance between Nox and Harebourg’s journeys raises important questions about the true nature of this artifact, which could be much more than a simple tool. Through this fusion, Harebourg seems to inherit a new power, allowing him to move to Frigost, his icy kingdom, with a revised design and to take on the role of the new villain of the season.
The omnipresence of the theme of time in the trailer is another central point of Iro Sef’s analysis. He envisions that Harebourg might attempt a journey into the past to save Frigost from its curse, a goal similar to Nox’s but on an even larger scale. However, to achieve such a feat, an immense amount of Wakfu would be necessary—a source that only the Eliatrope Goddess, freed during Season 4, could provide.
Iro Sef also dwells on the transmedia universe of Wakfu, mentioning the links between the series and the video game. He refers to the new expansion of the Wakfu game, “L’Île des Brumes,” which promises to further explore Nox’s past and his connections with the Eliacube. This expansion could reveal long-held secrets.
During a 2-hour live stream for the Kickstarter launch (available in the archives on our YouTube channel and below), Tot spontaneously answered questions from the chat, sharing some information about Season 5. He shares his thoughts on character development, particularly Flopin and Elely, comparing them to his own children. He explains how his family observations influence the series: “Flopin is a bit like my son, and Elely like my daughter… I imagined Flopin leaving home to find his own way.”
“There will be things revolving around mechasms, but you won’t see them at the heart of the story again,” he mentioned, “There will be mechasms, but at the same level as Season 4, sprinkled in.” He also confirmed that “the gods will not be at the heart of the narrative” and that “the story will remain on a human scale.” “The villains are human, and the heroes are too,” he specified, drawing inspiration from the Marvel model, preferring realistic stories and personal conflicts over cosmic battles like those in DC Comics.

“Tot confirmed the participation of young Lance Dur in Season 5.”
Regarding the new season, the producers have been cautious in their revelations to avoid spoilers. However, Tot hinted that the upcoming plot will address more complex and political themes, stating: “It’s going to be much more political this season.” This suggests an intention to tackle current issues. The update on the Ankama Animations website confirms this with the following themes: power and its consequences, corruption, magic.
The latter presents a new synopsis, confirming certain elements while introducing the Sadida kingdom as the second main plot, complementing Harebourg’s story:
“As Yugo and Amalia prepare to reign over the Sadida kingdom, a new threat arises: Count Harebourg, fused with the Eliacube, launches a reconquest campaign to restore the greatness of Frigost, the nation of which he is the sovereign. Iz, king of Odessa, is defeated and his daughter Crocro is captured. Meanwhile, strange spiders, controlled by a dark force, infiltrate the Sadida kingdom. Political tensions, betrayals, and buried secrets of the five Sadida clans will forge or break the unity of the kingdom.”
We were able to obtain a brief description of the 10-minute excerpt presented at Annecy:
This scene opens in a lively market or fair, where characters interact around buying and selling. Then, the scene moves to the preparation of a major event: a fight in an arena. Fighters warm up, some seriously, others arrogantly. A champion from the island of Gore Gona is introduced, with a mention that Gore Gona is “the weakest island in the archipelago, whose warriors are renowned for their tenacity.” We move into the arena and one of the protagonists declares: “May the best reign,” signaling that the winner will become the new King.
Iz, the King of Odessa, is greeted and explains that he has reigned for 300 years over the archipelago and that every year, champions come to challenge his throne. He acknowledges having had to take the lives of many parents and friends of the champions, who know what he is capable of, and yet they stand against him. He affirms that they all deserve the honors.
Then, a combat phase begins with the music “Detached Motion” by Worakls. The champion of the Gore Gona archipelago says: “Listen to me, one on one, we have no chance, none. We will have to work as a team if we want to take him down.” Another champion, Pharingore, refuses help, stating he has trained for years and that no one can survive his charge. The plan to work as a team is reiterated, and we see a “Beautiful coordination,” according to King Iz’s words.
Finally, King Iz thanks the champions for their courage, holding the head of a champion in each hand (four in total), and declares that it is over. The king’s last words are a “Hello, my daughter,” as the champion of the island of Gore Gona, Crocro, stands before him.
We have a total of five champions: Prince Kumachi, Prince Roman, Brutachian, Pharingore, Crocro, and one last unnamed in this excerpt.
Additionally, Ankama has provided a brief description of the 20 minutes of key scenes: “The marriage of Yugo and Amalia seals the alliance between Eliatropes and Sadidas in a magical and symbolic ceremony. As the young couple takes their place in power, new upheavals emerge…”
It turns out to be the Sadida nuptial dance ceremony, a crucial ritual for the future reign of the couple, intended to show their communion to the people. Yugo is initially petrified, fearing the cancellation of the marriage if he does not participate. He finally finds inspiration, declaring he wants to be near Amalia forever and now considering himself both Eliatrope and Sadida.
They prepare for their coronation as sovereigns, and the advisor reveals having moved the eliasphere for security reasons, a decision approved by Yugo given the past dangers of the artifact. Meanwhile, Chibi learns to master his powers and fly with Yugo’s help, who teaches him that the sky is the domain of the Eliatropes.
This final season marks the culmination of 16 years of animated adventures alongside the Brotherhood of Tofu. It is expected to provide a satisfying conclusion to the story while leaving the door open to other tales within the Krosmoz.
Wakfu Season 5: How will the season be funded?
Season 5 of “Wakfu” will be primarily funded via a Kickstarter campaign launched on February 12, 2025. Here’s how it is structured:
- Kickstarter: Crowdfunding via Kickstarter is central to the production of Season 5. The campaign aims to raise funds from fans to cover part of the production costs. Season 4 was already partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign, which allowed the production of 13 episodes with a total of over 1.5 million euros raised.
- Cost per episode: Each episode of Season 5 is estimated to cost around 500,000 €, meaning that with 26 episodes planned, the total budget for this season is 13 million euros.
- Rewards: The campaign offers various rewards to encourage contributors, ranging from exclusive digital packs to physical items or unique experiences such as masterclasses or meetings with the creators.
- Support from France Télévisions: Although Ankama is using crowdfunding, there is also support from France Télévisions, which announced Season 5. However, as a public channel, their investment is limited to 25% of the total budget of a program.
- Quality goal: Ankama has expressed its desire to maintain a high level of quality for this final season, which explains the need for additional funding beyond what traditional broadcasters or streaming platforms might provide.
- Broadcast and returns: The popularity of “Wakfu” on platforms like Okoo for Season 4 and the enthusiasm of the fans are factors that could influence future funding or post-Kickstarter partnerships.
The campaign for Season 4 was a resounding success, raising over 1.5 million euros, precisely 1,522,816 €, of which 1 million was directly allocated to production after deducting Kickstarter fees and the cost of rewards. This initiative demonstrated the strength and loyalty of the community. Approximately 17,889 contributors participated. The first milestone of 100,000 euros was reached in just 73 minutes, and the one million euros mark was exceeded in less than a week. The funds raised represented about 25% of the total budget needed to produce Season 4.
“Season 4 not only did well on Kickstarter, it also achieved huge success on their platform [France télévision]. We broke all audience records on the France Télévisions platform, even ahead of documentaries and live-action films and series.” said Tot.
Two hours after its launch, the funding campaign for Season 5 of Wakfu on Kickstarter had already exceeded 380,000 €, showing massive enthusiasm from fans from the very first hours. Three hours later, the fund reached the impressive sum of 500,000 € and continued to grow at a steady pace.
With the Kicktraq campaign tracking tool, we collected data from Ankama’s previous Kickstarter campaigns and made a projection to estimate the final amount of the current campaign. From the first day, Ankama was able to mobilize a large part of its fans, doubling the amount raised during the 2020 campaign (400k€ compared to 800k€ today).
It is also remarkable that the number of contributors in seven days had already reached half of the total from the Season 4 campaign. Moreover, the individual contributions from fans were higher than those for Season 4. The campaign closed on May 5 with a total of 3,005,659 €, divided between 1,785,790 € raised on Kickstarter, 898,617 € via BackerKit, and 321,252 € through the Supporter Pack on Ankama Launcher.

The main challenge of Season 5? Maintaining the budget without sacrificing quality. Malec emphasized during the campaign launch live: “It’s a constant balancing act. The idea is not to be economical, but to put every euro where it needs to be.”
Tot emphasized the main issue of production: the budget. He recalled that the exorbitant cost of 2D animation, especially for a series like Wakfu, justifies the significant amounts requested from fans. “It’s the talent that comes from people’s fingers and heads, and the entire budget goes into that,” he stated. We thus understand that the colossal budget is necessary to ensure the quality of the animation and meet the production deadline. Tot also compared himself to productions like Arcane (League of Legends), whose enormous budget (250 million euros) served as a benchmark for quality. “We’re not dealing with American budgets, it’s incomparable,” he added, specifying that Season 4 already exceeded 550,000€ per episode.
With a production cost of about 500,000 euros per episode, the series represents an ambitious financial project. “We put between 1.5 and 2 million euros of our own money into Season 4,” he added, specifying that the series recoups its costs through rights sales. However, for Season 4, “One of the two [streaming services] made us an offer for the worldwide rights of 100,000 dollars… for 15 episodes!” he lamented, preferring to broadcast the series for free on their YouTube channel.
Tot confirmed that this season will be the last, while mentioning a possible extension of the universe through Waven, a project already in development.
“We have gained a certain respect from France Télévisions, who consider us as people who know what they are doing,” said Tot. “We have achieved a freedom of tone,” he insisted, highlighting that this climate of trust is rare in the French television landscape.
Wakfu Season 5: How many episodes for the season?
Season 5 of “Wakfu” will mark the end of the series with 26 episodes, returning to the format of the first two seasons. Each episode will last about 22 minutes, as in previous seasons.
Reached in less than 24 hours, the milestones of 1 million € and 1.5 million € unlocked two new end credits in collaboration with an artist (not specified in the sources). The Kickstarter project also reveals that a special episode has been unlocked, although its subject remains unknown. Thanks to exceeding the 3 million euros milestone, an additional 22-minute episode, focused on Flopin and Madagaskan, will be produced. This episode could even have been developed into a mini-series of 7 episodes of 10 minutes each if the contributions had reached 4 million euros. However, this goal was not achieved, as the campaign closed with a total of 3,005,659 €. During the Annecy conference, a question was asked about the possibility of creating a new opening sequence as well as a new musical theme. The answer was affirmative.
What casting for Wakfu Season 5?
Regarding the casting, the Kickstarter campaign mentions that Anthony Roux, alias Tot, will be back as the series’ screenwriter and co-director of Season 5. He will be joined by Alexandre Ulmann, alias Malec, as storyboarder and second co-director. Other members of the team from previous seasons may also join the production.
The precise information regarding the casting of Season 5 of Wakfu is not yet fully available. However, based on the voices of the main characters in previous seasons, it is likely that several actors and actresses will reprise their iconic roles. Among them are Fanny Bloc as Yugo, Adeline Chetail as Amalia Sheran Sharm, Geneviève Doang as Evangelyne, and Thomas Guitard as Sir Tristepin de Percedal.
Furthermore, Season 5 could introduce new characters, voiced by new actors, although no official information has been communicated on this subject yet. The pledge level 7 of the campaign at 8000€ mentions that 26 people will have the opportunity to lend their voice to a character in this new season, which could suggest the appearance of new protagonists, secondary roles, or simple cameos.
For more precise details on the casting, we will have to wait for official announcements from Ankama or updates published on their website and social networks.
