Monster Slaughter: release, episodes, story… everything you need to know about the board game that’s getting animated

Défile !

Monster Slaughter, the new animated series by Ankama, promises to be as fascinating as it is disturbing, inspired by the dark and provocative universe of the board game of the same name. A live-streamed extreme reality show, broadcast to billions of violence-hungry viewers craving thrills and excitement. Let’s dust off the crystal ball (or Nox’s Eliacube, if you prefer): Where does this series really stand?

What is the story of Monster Slaughter?

Monster Slaughter is an animated series adapted from the eponymous board game created by Ankama. The story is set in the near future, where an artificial intelligence launches a bloody and extreme reality show called Monster Slaughter. In this program, ten controversial personalities are forced to participate in deadly survival challenges, filmed to entertain an audience hungry for thrills. This animated adaptation moves away from the board game’s concept (where monsters hunt students in a cabin) to offer an original vision centered on a brutal spectacle orchestrated by an AI. The tone is dark, mature, and gory, in the vein of series like Lastman.

“They will die for their sins. And you will be there to see it all. In a dystopian future, an artificial intelligence kidnaps nine global icons, each embodying a vice of our civilization. The setting: Monster Slaughter, a relentless reality show, broadcast live to billions of viewers. Each ‘guest’ will face the very sin that propelled them to the top. But only one will survive…”

At the Annecy Festival 2025, an early version of the pilot episode of Monster Slaughter was presented. This version is somewhere between a storyboard and a layout: the drawings, without backgrounds, are accompanied by temporary voices. These elements allow the animation teams to better understand the artistic and narrative direction of the series. This episode offers a first glimpse of the tone and overall direction of the series:

The episode begins in a confusing and chaotic atmosphere, where several characters wake up in an unknown place, disoriented and panicked. They discover that they are wearing strange bracelets, apparently grafted onto their skin, which seem linked to a dangerous game. Among the characters, we meet Ami, a combative woman, Chrise Leblanc, a sarcastic young man, Ron Rusk, a former Texas senator with a strong personality, and Johan, a former free-fight champion. Other characters, such as Aaron Carlson, a former athlete, and a mysterious individual nicknamed “Z,” also appear.

The protagonists quickly realize they have been kidnapped and placed in a hostile environment, far from their daily lives. The place is unlike anything they know, with strange decor and an oppressive atmosphere. They are confronted with bizarre creatures, including decapitated chickens and “zombie chickens,” which attack them. Tension rises as the characters try to understand the rules of this macabre “game” they have been forced into.

As the episode progresses, the characters discover that their bracelets record monetary gains (for example, $50,000 for pressing a button) and that they must perform actions to accumulate money while avoiding danger. They find themselves in a kind of arena where they must choose weapons to defend themselves, but resources are limited to the “value” of their bracelet. Some, like Ron, adopt a bravado attitude, while Ami and Johan show their survival instincts. The episode reaches its climax with a violent confrontation against the creatures. The characters must collaborate (or compete) to survive, while rivalries and tensions emerge, especially between Chris and Ron.

The episode ends with Ron’s death, which results in a monetary bonus being shared among the survivors, though this raises moral questions about the nature of the game and the consequences of their actions. The characters, trapped in this deadly game, seek to understand who is behind this organization and why they were chosen. A mysterious light and eerie music suggest that the adventure is far from over, leaving the protagonists facing an uncertain future.

Who is in the cast? And for which roles?

To date, no specific names have been announced regarding the voice cast of the series. As it is an anime, we can expect a team of voice actors to play the nine controversial personalities, as well as other key characters (such as the AI or figures linked to the show). Details about the roles and actors remain confidential, but Ankama is known for working with iconic voices.

Who is directing? Where is production at?

The director of Monster Slaughter has not yet been officially confirmed. However, Tot (Anthony Roux), artistic director and co-founder of Ankama, has been associated with the project since its announcement. He notably described Monster Slaughter as a “cursed project” due to production challenges, but it is not certain that he is directing it. Ankama Animations is working closely with Studio No Border, its Japanese subsidiary founded in Tokyo in 2018 by Thomas Romain, which acts as a creative bridge between France and Japan.

The production of Monster Slaughter is ongoing. The project faced initial difficulties, including unspecified issues with a platform, which slowed its development. Despite this, Ankama and ADN (Animation Digital Network) have confirmed that the series is progressing and remains actively in preparation.

Is there a trailer?

Yes, a trailer was unveiled during the official project announcement in June 2023. It highlights the dark and gory atmosphere of the series, with scenes of violence and survival that underscore the brutal tone of this fictional reality show.

Number of episodes and where to watch Monster Slaughter?

The number of episodes planned is 10 episodes at this stage. This represents a classic structure for a short season, aligned with the 10×22-minute format. No information about additional seasons is available at this time.

The series will be broadcast exclusively on ADN (Animation Digital Network), the leading French platform dedicated to animation. This project, developed in partnership with ADN, was officially announced by the latter.

However, other broadcasters could quickly join the adventure: in France, channels like Game One might be interested, while in Japan, partnerships with local channels are not to be ruled out, especially given the Franco-Japanese collaboration that characterizes Monster Slaughter—similar to what was done for Radiant.

When is Monster Slaughter releasing?

The project was unveiled in June 2023, and production is actively ongoing. While it is likely that the series will be released in the near future, no confirmation has been made yet. We will have to wait for further announcements to know the exact schedule.

Ankama’s animation branch aims to release two animated series per year. However, despite the update of the official website during the Annecy Festival 2025, it only offers a simple synopsis. Similarly, ADN, which released the trailer in 2023, has not yet revealed a release date or even a broadcast window.

Given the pace of previous productions (for example, Bestiale took about two years from announcement to release), it is possible to consider a release in 2026?

Ankama’s communication has recently focused on other animation projects planned for 2025, such as Bestiale, Welsh & Shedar, and Morshiken. Fans of the dark and offbeat universe of Monster Slaughter will have to wait a little longer to discover this new animated series, which promises to be one of Ankama’s most original productions.
